What does it mean to be an Accessible Trail?

To meet the Accessibility Standards for Outdoor Developed Areas:

The trail surface must be firm and stable.

The trail must be 60” wide (otherwise passing areas are required every 1000 feet).

The running slope (incline along the length of the trail) must 1:12 (8.3%) for no more than 30% of the entire trail.

The cross slope (incline across the width of the trail) must be a maximum of 1:20 (5%) for gravel surfaces and 1:48 (2%) for hard surfaces such as boardwalks

Obstacles on gravel surfaces (e.g. rocks) must be less than 2 inches and for hard surfaces less than one-half inch.

Gaps in bridges, grates, etc. must be less than one-half inch diameter

Resting intervals: any time the trail running slope exceeds 1:20 (5%), Resting intervals are required between trail segments to allow an opportunity to stop after a steep segment.

 

Are dogs allowed in Hope Woods?

Dogs are allowed in Hope Woods if they are on leash or under effective voice control. Please be respectful of those uncomfortable around dogs, and please pick up after your pet.

Note: Hope Cemetery rules regarding dogs are different than in the Woods. Pets MUST be leashed or in a vehicle when in the cemetery.

What is the relationship between Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods, Hope Cemetery Corporation, and Kennebunk Land Trust?

In 2019, a conservation easement was placed on Hope Woods, preserving the Woods for future generations. The easement is held by Kennebunk Land Trust, the property is owned by Hope Cemetery Corporation, and the property is maintained and managed by Friends of Hope Cemetery & Woods.

 

Is Hope Woods open in the winter?

All of the trails in Hope Woods are open year-round from dawn until dusk. However, when Hope Cemetery is closed, Hope Trail Lane and the parking lot at the trailhead are not open. Visitors are welcome to access the trails on foot via the cemetery (Barnard Lane), Fletcher Street, Wood Pond Lane, or Woodhaven Drive.
